    Product Description

This is an ideal solution for repairing damage and restoring colour to leather steering wheels.

Steering wheels are one of the most common areas of wear, damage and colour loss in any car interior. Constant contact with the skin of the hands inevitably leads to a build-up of dirt and grease in the leather. Exposure to sunlight over long periods leads to colour fading over time.  Scuffs and scrapes from exiting and entering the car are an all too common cause of damage.

In order to repair and restore a worn, damaged or faded leather steering wheel effectively, you need a specialist set of products. Our Leather Steering Wheel Repair Kit has been put together specifically for that purpose.  It combines multiple professional grade products into one handy kit. With an easy-to-follow set of instructions, the kit provides professional results.

The process is straightforward and is designed with the DIY user in mind.

Containing a powerful liquid-form leather degreaser to remove any grease build up that may have penetrated the leather and an alcohol-based cleaner, to effectively clean down the surface of the leather, cleaning up your steering wheel is a breeze. Leather Binder strengthens the leather, particularly in areas of wear and damage and the Base Colour is used to restore the colour and finish.

Steering wheels are the most used, but often the most neglected part of any leather car interior.

    Steering Wheel Restoration Instructions

Before attempting any repair, we recommend that you thoroughly clean the steering wheel with Leather Cleaner and leave to dry.

      Step One: Steering Wheel Preparation
Using the 320-grit wet and dry sandpaper, gently sand down the leather; paying more attention to any cracked, rough, or peeling areas. Sand these areas with more pressure to make the leather smooth.

Dampen a cloth with the Liquid Degreaser then wipe down the whole surface of the leather. If you have any areas of grease build up, the Liquid Degreaser should be used to remove the grease and decontaminate the areas. Heavily contaminated areas will appear darker than the colour of the leather.

Apply more Leather Degreaser to a cloth and rub in a circular motion to the greasy areas. Applying heavy pressure with the cloth will assist in the removal of the grease. Continue to work the Liquid Degreaser into the rest of the affected area, rotating the cloth as it becomes dirty with the grease. Leave to dry (drying times of the degreaser can be reduced to around 10 seconds with the use of a hairdryer).

Inspect the area and repeat the process if necessary. You should repeat the process until the dark, grease-stained area appears lighter when dry. This will indicate that the Leather Degreaser has removed the grease.

Dampen a dry cloth with the Alcohol Cleaner and wipe down the whole surface of the leather. This will remove any residue of the previous products and further prepare the leather. Leave the leather to dry before proceeding to the next step.

      Step Two: Steering Wheel Repair
After the previous steps, the leather may have become fibrous or rough; with the use of the Leather Binder, these areas can be strengthened and repaired. Apply the Leather Binder to the sponge and rub it into the damaged areas. It should be applied in light coats with pressure to allow the product to soak into the fibre structure. Leave the binder to dry (this can be sped up with the use of a hairdryer). Using the 1200 grit wet and dry sandpaper, lightly sand over the areas where the Leather Binder has been applied. Any dust will need to be removed by using a slightly damped cloth with Alcohol Cleaner and leaving to dry.

      Step Three: Steering Wheel Restoration
Apply the Base Colour to the steering wheel with the new sponge. Use a light, even, dabbing motion to build up the colour. Several light coats give a far superior result than a couple of heavy coats. Dry off each coat before proceeding to the next. Continue to build up the colour until you are happy that the whole area has been coloured.

      Additional Information

The steering wheel can be used as normal after three hours but will continue to cure over seven days. After seven days we recommend using Leather Protection Cream to help maintain the leather and prevent further grease build-up.

    Q. Can the Repair Kit be used on any type of steering wheel?

    A. The Steering Wheel Repair Kit can be used on any black leather steerng wheel. If you have a different colour wheel you will also need to purchase a bottle of Leather Repair Paint in whatever colour you require.

    Q. How long will this last once I’ve restored my steering wheel?

As long as the instructions have been followed properly, you should expect to see the same life span as original. For example, if it lasted five years before becoming damaged, it should easily last another five years after repair, if used in the same way.

To further protect and prolong the life of the leather, we recommend applying our Leather Protection Cream.

    Q. Does this leave a Gloss finish?

    A. No. Our Base Colour comes in a Satin finish. This is the standard finish for most steering wheels.

When a steering wheel is shiny, it is generally due to a build-up of grease and dirt. To stop this from happening we recommend cleaning your steering wheel with our Leather Cleaner, and then protect the leather with our Leather Protection Cream every three months. These can be purchased together in our Leather Care Kit.

    Q. What can I do if my steering wheel isn’t black?

    A. You should still buy this kit as it contains all the product you need to clean and repair the steering wheel. Then you just need to buy the Leather Repair Paint in whatever colour you need.
